There are a lot of decisions to be made when it comes to designing the interior of your new home. Getting to choose these elements can be an incredibly fun part of the building process, but it can also be a little daunting.
So we called in an expert, asking Metricon Senior Interior Designer Melissa Colley for her top tips on how to ensure your interior design nails that fine line between interesting and timeless.
Kit out your kitchen
In the past few years, many of our home designs have included a butler’s pantry as people want a separate work space and more kitchen storage. It’s quite common now to even put the refrigerator in the butler’s pantry to keep the main kitchen area looking streamlined.
People also love integrated cabinetry throughout the kitchen, including housing appliances such as dishwashers and wall-mounted ovens, to continue the seamless look across the whole kitchen.
Another key design element is adding plasterboard bulkheads above kitchen cupboards to create clean lines. Bringing the bulkheads down to meet the overhead cupboards really adds that extra visual appeal and helps complete the kitchen design.
There are endless choices when it comes to designing your perfect, beautiful kitchen. Some key elements that are popular include upgrading the Caesarstone kitchen benchtop and using timber grain laminates for your kitchen cupboards.
You can also personalise your kitchen by adding a beautiful feature tile to the splashback. Perhaps consider upgrading to an under-mount sink with a tap that has a pull-out nozzle to help make washing up a breeze!
Love your living area
The best way to add design elements to your living spaces is by adding wallpaper or a feature wall, as these can be changed in-line with trends. Hard finishes such as tiles, laminated surfaces and stone should all be kept neutral as this will give your home more aesthetic longevity and will appeal to buyers when it comes time to sell.
Neutral colours will never go out of style and should form the base of your colour scheme as this will appeal to more buyers in future. However, adding splashes of colour can add vibrancy to your home.
The Pantone Colour of the Year is ‘Living Coral’, a vibrant hue with a golden tone that energises and enlivens a room.
It is best to include a popular, seasonal colour such as this with soft furnishings and accessories, which can be swapped around to suit the seasons. When you start with a neutral tone, it is easy to accessorise with cushions, throw rugs or even artwork.
Beautify your bedroom
A bedroom should be an inviting and relaxing space and it’s really a personal choice whether you want this room to look feminine or masculine.
You can dress up a bedroom by adding a feature wall with beautiful textured wallpaper. Show your creativity with bedside tables and put pendant lights above these.
These elements, when combined with some artwork, will really make a statement.
A bathroom sanctuary
There is a trend to have master bedrooms as private sanctuaries where you can truly relax. A lot of our home designs flow effortlessly between the bedroom and ensuite to create spaciousness.
Bathrooms are now bold in design with gorgeous design features like free-standing baths. You can have a bath on any budget, as they are available in stone, reconstituted finishes or acrylic.
A lot of people also want bigger, walk-in showers in ensuites and a completely modern look with frameless glass screens.
There is a world of gorgeous tiles to choose from and modern features include using patterns and stone mosaics.
There is also a growing trend for people to choose brass or black tapware. Black, in particular, is seen in more homes now, and is often used throughout the whole home for a modern look.
