5 Tips For Styling Your New Home

When it comes to discovering how to style your new home, it can take some experimentation to align your interiors with your aesthetic and maximise the space of your home. We sat down with Arlia Boulton from Bold Living Home, who shared her top home styling tips and tricks for achieving an interior design that delivers the luxe look year-round.

Styling your new abode is one of the most exciting parts of becoming a homeowner. It allows you to find your home decor style and create a striking backdrop for you and your family to make many memories as you transform your new house into a home.

But amidst forever-changing decor trends, finding the balance of statement finishes and comfortable furnishings that best represent your eye for design and seamlessly integrate into the feel and streetscape of the Greenbank Everleigh community can feel a little challenging at first.

To help you get ahead of the designers' block and stop searching for 'style my home' on Google, read on and incorporate Arlia Boulton's helpful advice on how to style your new home with a timeless look that works around your lifestyle.

Plan your home styling concept before construction begins

One of the many benefits of building your home is the opportunity to choose a floorplan and fittings that will accommodate the furniture you need in each area of your home, says Arlia.

"Use your floorplan to do a rough sketch of furniture placement to ensure there is plenty of space, and consider choosing flooring, cabinetry and appliances that will complement the 'look' you want to achieve," she says.

One of the best home styling tips is anticipating the room's flow and how people will move from one room to another. Some homeowners may even use an online room planner to view the room's contents at the same scale. This helps you visualise the proportions of furniture to the size of the room and check that it doesn't monopolise your space or impede access, making your room feel less inviting to enter and linger.

Create a colour palette to define your look

"Choose a 'theme' you can use to set the look and feel of your home, whether it's cool coastal colours reminiscent of the beach, earthy tones and plants that take you back to nature or a modern-minimalist approach with a monochrome palette." Once you've chosen your base tones, you can 'dress' different spaces in your home using decor in bold accent colours," says Arlia. "Cushions, throws, rugs, towels, plants and kitchenware are all small statement pieces that can be easily updated over time to refresh your home, while maintaining its overall style."

Experimenting with colour theory enables you to adjust the feel of your room and create an emotional response. If you prioritise a tranquil atmosphere to relax after work, consider muted earthy tones or create the illusion of a bigger room with a palette of soft-off whites that reflect the natural light. To add cosy warmth to a reading nook, create a feature wall in brooding, deep primary colours. When it's time to upgrade to a larger dwelling, many homeowners stick to classic neutrals to style their homes for sale.

Another home styling tip is to consider mixing different materials to layer your interior with a sense of texture for added visual intrigue. From plush velvet cushions, timber decorator items and furniture with metal or bone inlay or luxe marble, you can instantly add a personal touch to make your new home feel like your own.

Keep it simple to highlight your home decor style

One of the most important rules of home styling is to create space, which means avoiding 'clutter' by only purchasing furnishings that are practical and necessary.

"It can be tempting to 'over-style' a space with lots of decor and detail," says Arlia.

"Try to stick to the basics and keep it simple."

Sometimes, less is more - not only will fewer decorator pieces help minimise general maintenance, but the 'empty' space will draw more attention to the beautiful furnishings you already have.

Choose quality pieces to enjoy a lasting interior style

Even if you're on a budget, it might be worth purchasing a higher quality piece of furniture with a warranty than a cheaper item that is unlikely to last.

"Try to choose furnishings that are neutral rather than on-trend, so they don't date too quickly and complement any style updates you make down the track," advises Arlia.

When trying to find your home decor style, it can be tempting to add some instant glamour with the latest 'it' decorator item. But by being more selective, you can continue to draw enjoyment from your existing pieces rather than updating your countertops and shelving every season.

Be practical and choose your home decor around the household

Arlia says you should always style your home for comfort, not for 'show'.

"Consider how your family uses each space in your home, and ensure your styling can practically meet your day to day needs," she says.

"A young family might make good use of a large corner suite, while a more mature family with older children might prefer a smaller lounge paired with recliners and occasional seating.

When styling your home, "Remember that anything old can be made new again - with some creativity. Upcycling is becoming a popular way to renew old furniture with a lick of paint or a new cover. It may be more practical (and affordable!) to refresh your existing furniture than to buy new."
